What’s the best advice while traveling to Florida Keys?

I’m surprising my husband with a vacation to the Florida Keys, a spot he’s always wanted to visit. Is it best to stay in the “historic” areas, or regular condos? Also, would it be best to fly to Miami/Ft. Lauderdale and drive or just fly straight in to the Keys? Any other spots to see while there?
